I have yet to really look under the hood of my 5er (still get free maintenance), but I'm pretty sure the filter is located on top of the engine. Try doing a search on the forums. Also, YouTube has tons of videos - I found out everything I needed to know about my wife's MB.

As for the amount of oil, I think at least 7 qts, but somebody else may chime in with a defininte answer.

Man thanks for the info. I checked with an auto parts store and the 7 qt is correct.

Here's a great video that details the process: 530i Oil Change

The oil filter is located on the bottom of the engine. You need a special wrench to remove the filter: Assenmacher V410

It takes 6.9 quarts to do the change. Use only BMW approved oils, here is a list that was current as of November 2009:

Thanks for the info. I don't have the filter wrench. I will buy one.

OH NOOOOOOO! BMW put the oil filter on the top of the engine of my '07 530xi!!! Should I tell them they did something wrong :

Now to point you in the "right" direction here's a picture - by - picture of the change on a 535 ... your 530 will be similar. https://5series.net/forums/topic/497...my-535i-today/ And the oil filter will require a "special" wrench. I can't confirm the Assenmacher noted in one post is the correct part.

I have a sticky lifter in the engine. What will help this problem. Oil additive or what? Please help.

Sticky or just noticeable ticking?

The ticking is due from not getting enough oil at startup and should go away when the engine is warm. Anything else will require replacing the lifter.

Ive been assigned to service an 06 530i, I work primarily on land Rovers.

Great forum, is there a reason for 15k oil change intervals and no dipstick?
