You know, I wonder sometimes as to whether the 1200 mile break-in period is really all that necessary. I mean, consider our pals across the pond who purchase a new car and start driving on the Autobahn (where the recommended speed is at least 81 mph/130 km/h). My next Bimmer purchase will definitely be a Euro Delivery, and I don't know how I can be expected to keep the speed down when I see all that sweet and unrestricted Autobahn pavement in front of me.
Thw break in only recommends not to exceed 4500 RPM, 110mph, or go full throttle for 1200 miles. 80mph on the autobahn is easy without exceeding those limits. My feeling is the break in is not "necessary" but still results in a better feeling and longer lasting motor. I did occasionally push it past 4500 rpm prior to 1200 miles (but waited until after 600 miles) but only as part throttle in 2nd or 3rd gear. The biggest no-no's would be to run it hard cold and to abuse it while the parts are still settling in.

I fully intended to stay below 4500 for 1200 miles, and mostly did so. I remember the first run up to Mt. Rainier a few weeks ago, though, bright sunny day and mid-week no one up there. I goosed it good up through some twists through the trees, and DAMN. I mean DAMN!! That needle popped to 5500 two or three times like a quartz clock! It really took me for surprise how quick it was.

No long lasting damage I hope. I keep my cars forever,

Cal

Talking

Stay below 4,500 RPMs & 100 MPH during the first 1,200... then gradually increase the revs and speed up to about 2,000 - 2,400 miles. Then (regardless of what the book says) get the oil changed! Then make it your bitch!!!

1200...damn I thought it was 1000...then again I do not think I had the chance to stay above 4500 rpms for any significant time...I have to give it to you Jeff...I had to get on the phone and talk to someone to get my mind off the empty stretch ahead of me...now that the snow has cleared and after I wash her down...I think I will pound the @#$*#&$^&@ you know...

man it is worth all the wait!!!
