Okay, I am so close I can almost feel it. The magical 1200 mile point and the end of my 550's break in period. I have read that a lot of people ignore this and push their cars almost as soon as they get them. Others wait for a few hundred miles and still others cave in at 1000. I am going the full distance. Why?? because BMW told me so. I am not sure of the specific reasons why we are told to adhere to the break in period. Probably because the engine well....needs to break in before it is pushed to its limits. This makes sense but not a lot of sense but I really don't care. The way I look at it is, why would BMW sell cars with tremendous power capabilities and then tell us that we need to wait a while before testing them?? The reason is because they have their reasons and they know their reasons better then I do. I mean if it was up to me and I was at BMW and the break in period was unnecessary I would encourage people to floor the crap out of their cars right out of the dealer parking lots. However, they do not and their instructions on how to drive during the break in period are very specific. I don't think that they're there for no reason so for now, I will wait the 200 miles and then pound the living crap out of it.

 

If you want to follow BMW recommendations you should only "gradually increase engine and driving speeds" after you pass 1,200 miles. I usually delay real beating till 3,000 miles.

 

i followed the break-in procedures. but only once in a while do i just mash it

 

Lively break-in yields a lively ride. Now you have to retrain your transmission. You have patience . . .

 

Actually I think it's only been out of Sport manual mode once or twice.

 

even in break-in i was driving in manual mode... just had to resist the temptation of not exceeding 4.5k rpm

Time to wake the sleeping beast

 

i accidently transport cars from time to time. and if u see how these kids are driving the car of the ships it is amazing especially the nice cars like bmw porsche etc etc are being raped evenbefore the engine is warm. in som eports they have speeding camera's for these kids.
many years ago before they introduced the volvo x(somethin). volvo wanted to ship this car to a show as a premiere/introduction the stevedores go tthere hands onthe keys of this car and took it for a spin resulting that they crashed the car. so volvo had to come up with a new model. before the show.

the cars are notbeing treated everywhere like that it is just in some places where they dont care and where the stevedores think they are god!

but if bmw says it is better then why not. i would certainly do it you never know.

 

You know, I wonder sometimes as to whether the 1200 mile break-in period is really all that necessary. I mean, consider our pals across the pond who purchase a new car and start driving on the Autobahn (where the recommended speed is at least 81 mph/130 km/h). My next Bimmer purchase will definitely be a Euro Delivery, and I don't know how I can be expected to keep the speed down when I see all that sweet and unrestricted Autobahn pavement in front of me.
