Have you looked closely at the new blades? They are one-piece rubber with some sort of spring-steel embedded in it.

I first saw them on an M-B S-Class and thought they were pretty cool. Less lift/drag at speed and most likely less expensive to replace.

My dealer replaces my blades almost every time the car is in. I just had them replaced at around 5000 miles.
