Metal deposits etc. Basically they tell you if the oil is still usable or not.

I did my own oil change at 5,000 miles using Mobil 1 0/40. I'm almost at 10,000 miles now. When I do the next change at 10K, I'll send it to Blackstone (http://www.blackstone-labs.com/) to see what kind of shape it is in. I'm guessing they will tell me I can keep to a 7,500 mile OCI (oil change interval).

The test kit is free (http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free_test_kit.html), and they charge US$22.50 for the analysis.

Read through their FAQ - they're a bunch of loons, but in a good way: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/faq_gas.html
Thanks for the info

Has anyone got an oil analysis at the 14k mark? Would be interesting to see how much life is really left in the oil.

How much does it cost to do oil analysis?
I will spend money to replace my oil instead, I can guarantee the condition is perfect.

black oil isnt always bad. Most of the blackstone reports ive done in the past always came back with plrenty of life left. oil turns color within the first hundred miles of use, so its a bad indicator of quality.
Agreed. Black oil does evoke an emotional response of "Ugh - that oil is no good!", but I prefer facts. I've read a few reports from people with 335s, and it seems like the N54 is a little hard on oil. 1,000 more miles, and I'll know for sure.

When I get the report back I'll post it.

ahhhhhhhh............8.5 qts of virgin syntec oil, its one of the simple pleasures of life
and to top it off a new oil filter, thats like putting on a pair of tighty-whitey fresh out of the dryer and still warm
Good question.

My car has done 21,000 miles from new and the service indicator is showing 1,500 miles to its first oil change!

You've done 21,000 miles on the original oil? Good God.

I did the full service interval on the first oil. ~16K. Didn't need any top-off during the entire period. I've got 10K on the subsequent oil, and iDrive says the oil level is at the top. If it's not consuming oil, that's a damn good sign IMO.

Unfortunately, modern day mechanical engineering information isn't commonly shared. The "wisdom" we apply to this topic is based on rudimentary understanding of mid-20th century technology... a time when engines were simple enough for cavemen to understand (sorry Geico cavemen). I'm not convinced anyone outside of the deep recesses of major automakers' test labs understand the true requirements of modern engines. I suspect they're probably far more resilient than we could imagine.

The oil change industry isn't helping either... they've built an entire industry on scare tactics. Providing good information is bad for their bottom line.
