I don't agree with your statement that it cheapens the brand as less than 2,500 will be produced worldwide. I had gripes on their use of the N54 engine, but all future M3's will be turbo charged 6 cylinders. Many BMW purists believe this is the closest thing to an e30 M3 that BMW will ever produce. So far all the reviews have been positive including Top Gear.
i agree with those bmw purist. i am not a fan of the 1m. i would have liked it MUCH better if they simply took the e46 m3 engine and stroked it up to a 3.5 with like ~365 hp. high revving straight 6 is the way to go IMO. bmw philosophy is high revving, low displacement, NA cars. i dont mind having turbo cars for non-m but m cars need to stay true to their roots! e30 roots!

Went with the E90 M3... The 1M was not available when I ordered my car so the decision was made for me! Not a huge fan of the 1 series design but I bet they are fun to drive. Not sure how young your kids are but getting a car/booster seat in and out of a coupe is not easy. Even today I would do the E90 M3 again over the 1M...

Edit: And if you want the E90, better order now, if they will even take it. Production of the E90 ends in October...

For me, the 1 Series M dilutes the M brand. It's not that the car isn't capable, it's more that it is much more of a parts bin special than anything we've seen lately out of the M Division. Even the X5M and X6M, two other abominations, had unique M-specific hardware. I'm old school about these things, and for me the E9X M3 and E60 M5 are probably the pinnacle of what M used to be. I worry about the F10 M5 too, it is going to be a very heavy car.

Anyway, positive reviews aside, for me, the 1 Series M is the tipping point where M really is short for ///Marketing. Not saying it isn't a capable car, but for me it is should be a 135is, and not an M.

The 1 series is a blast to drive, but I will always reckon it to a chick car. No offense, but I crack up every time I see a guy driving one. Reminds me when dudes thought the Miata was a cool car. Not to mention that I would feel a little to "Fast and the Furious" in it (the first movie).
