Just want to get a idea of what anyone has paid to get their transmission replaced. I have an '04 530i and I think this bad boy is going soon. My Indy said it could just be the torque converter but he will know when I bring it in.
What kind of pain am I in for? Rebuilt or New?

That's teamwork!!

Most replacement transmissions are rebuilds ... if you go that way (unless the post Theo linked to you works out) be absolutely certain it's a BMW Factory Rebuild. These BMW boxes aren't something AAMCO can handle reliably! The last time I R&R'ed an automatic was for a '98 740 and the total (discounted) cost for me at a BMW shop was $3800. That was a BMW rebuilt completely installed and guaranteed for 2 yrs.
