where to get service manuals (on web)?

Even if the service manual is available, I guess it would be highly technical and beyong the comprehensive capability of many enthusiasts.
I would prefer, if I could get my hands on one, the full Parts Catalogue. This catalogue is on a CD ROM, the one that the parts executive refers to when you need a particular part over the counter.
This catalogue, lists the part number and pictures of the parts including wire harnesses (gives good clue as to what goes where), screws (clue to how to access, remove or add parts DIY). And along with the year of manufacture (of your car) you can't go wrong when you have the right part number!
This way, you would know, whether a missing part (option) could be retrofitted or not (if the retro-fit needs to have a wire harness fitted from the boot to the dash or requires very specific tools and programming,one may want to forget about it).
Otherwise, the service manual may only be needed if one needs to overhaul the car!

My Ride: 2006 550i Sport Package, Cold Weather Package, Premium Sound Package, Comfort Access, Xenon Headlights, Adaptive Headlight Control, Navigation System, Steptronic Transmission.
