OKAY - I'm at my desk in work at the moment, but will sit down and try to describe the sequence in detail when I have time later tonight.

My ride is 23 months old (purchased used about 3 weeks ago). Although under manufacturers warranty until the end of next year (registered 30/12/03), the i-drive kept telling me that it was due for a Brake Fluid Change on 11/2005.

I'm no spring chicken and have been tinkering with cars for over 25 years. Until I bought my first (nearly new) BMW about 10 years ago, I'd never come accross the "Change the brake fluid every 2 years" syndrome.

Yes I know all the technical stuff about brake fluid absorbing moisture and losing it's ability to function properly, but when I was a lad (in the days of British Leyland, drum brakes and leaky wheel cylinders), this was something you could feel under your right foot. (Pedal starts to become spongy, so it's time to check the seals and if no leaks change the fluid).

Anyway, to cut to the chase, I don't believe that a modern car really needs a complete brake fluid change when it's not even 2 yrs old and has covered less than 18k miles. (Does anyone else believe this is a necessary thing for one so young, or is it just a money spinner for the dealers?)

I decided that I wasn't prepared to fork out my hard earned for a fluid change after just having spent my life's savings (and some more) to buy the new baby so I followed the service indicator reset instructions from this forum. The brake fluid is now due for a change in 11/2007, and which I will take a view on whether it gets changed nearer the time.

I'm new to the Forum, so forgive my wittering on. The instructions did take a bit of experimentation and interpretation before I figured out the sequence properly. (Symbols appeared not words and if you hesitate it just cancels the opportunity to accept the reset instruction). If anyone wants me to elaborate on what I did and what I saw, then I'll gladly write them down so you can have a look yourself.

I'll be changing the Microfilters myself - if they are really dirty enough when the time comes (in about 1,300 miles according to the i-drive) and resetting the service indicator afterwards.

From working on my last 5 (e39), which was simplicity itself to change brake pads and oil / oil filter / air filter, I expect to be doing the same on the E60 as by the time they need changing the warranty will be at an end anyway.

Here's to a long and happy relationship with my new baby. (Old e39 baby was nearly 8 years old by the time she left me last month).
Please do post the steps that you did to reset the servcie indicator. I tried it according to the instructions in this post but not successfully.

Right, I'll try and explain in detail what I did and what I saw when I was doing the Brake Fluid reset. Forgive me if the instructions seem patronising in any way but here goes:

Firstly with the ignition switched on, set the odometer trip meter back to zero by pushing it once. Then switch the ignition back off again. (I found this step was critical, otherwise I couldn't get to the "Service" menu).

Now you are ready to go through the reset steps as follows:

1. Switch the ignition on (so that the battery, Oil and Parking brake lights are displayed) and the key is ready to start the engine - but don't actually start the car.

2. Press the odometer reset button for between 5 and 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the centre appears in the top window between the clocks (where the outside temperature / time or date normally appears) - this is the "Service" icon.

3. Release the odometer button briefly and press again straight away which brings up a picture of the Brake Fluid symbol (same as the one that the i-drive shows when you look at the Service menu).

4. If you want to reset the Brake Fluid interval for another 2 years then keep holding the odometer button until the word "RESET?" appears at the bottom of the lower window.

5. Release the button briefly and push it in again and hold for about 5 - 10 seconds until the new date appears in the bottom window. You can then switch the ignition off and the new Brake Fluid date will appear in the service menu on the i-drive screen next time you switch on.

6. If you want to reset the Oil, Microfilter or Brake Pad indicators then you will need to follow the same sequence as steps 1 and 2 above, but when you get to step 3 and the brake Fluid icon appears, just release the button and press again and the next service item will appear.

7. You can continue releasing and pressing the button until the required service item icon appears for the one you want to reset. As soon as it does then hold in the button in until the word "RESET?" appears again as in step 4 above. Once the word "RESET?" has appeared, you need to release the button briefly and hold it in again for about 5 - 10 seconds until it is replaced by the new service interval figure (as per step 5 above).

Hints & Tips
Before actually resetting anything, go through steps 1, 2 and 6 above until you are familiar (and sure) what you want to reset. Practice this a few times and note down in what order the icons appear after the initial "Service" icon appears.

If you do happen to hold the button down too long against an item you don't want to reset and the "RESET?" appears, just leave the button alone for 10 seconds or so and it will not let you reset the item. (Alternatively just switch the ignition off and start again).

Sometimes if you have not released and pressed the button again quickly enough, when you hold it down again the German technical writing will appear after about 15 - 20 seconds instead of the Service item icon you were expecting. (If this happens just switch off the ignition and start again).

Once you are sure what item you want to reset and are confident of the sequence, then give it a go. If you do hesitate between releasing and pressing the button at any time, you will have to go back to the beginning and start again as "he who hesitates is lost".

It took me a while to get the hang of it and I'm sure it'll take me a while to get my head around it again next time.

Let me know how you get on.

You are welcome. Please let me know if the sequence works exactly the same for you or whether my instructions need a little revising.

Thanks

I will try it in the weekend (today or tomorrow) and let everyone know the result. I have the service due showed up few days ago for the state inspection sticker. It is similar to the motor inspection in UK every year. I will try to reset that

Kev525,

I tried your method this morning and it was exactly the way you described

However, for my case, it was the state inspection service due. This is somewhat different than other warning messages. When I got to the inspection service due icon, I released the button briefly and then pressed and held for 5 - 10 seconds. The inspection service icon changed to a "big" triangle with an exclaimation mark in the center (service icon). Soon after that the display went back to normal clock, mileage, etc.... I tried it several times, same result.

If I held the button for too long, more than 10 seconds, the German text appeared. I simply just turned off the car and started all over again.

The trick to reset the state inspection service due message was that after the "big" service triangle appears, turn off the car and then starts the car again. Then we go into the service menu under main iDrive menu and the click into the inspection service due menu. Under that menu, we can set the next due date. I set it to 11/2007 and then turned off my car. Restarted the car again, no more inspection service due message showed up !!!!

In summary, the method to reset the state inspection service due message has 2 parts. The first part is your method to get to the inspection service icon with the odometer reset button and then press and hold for 5 - 10 seconds until the "big" service triangle showup. The second part is to reset the date under the iDrive serivce menu.

All other service due such as brake, spark plug, oil, etc are reset by using the odometer reset button as your described.

I hope that my write up is clear enough to help other owners in this forum to reset their service message.

Thanks,

Glad to hear that the instructions were spot on (my memory ain't what it used to be).

Also, with your extra information about the State Inpection, the subject should now be well and truly covered. It'll be interesting to know if anyone else has used them and what their verdict is.

This process does not allow you to change/erase fault codes from the car.
