Removing the swirl flaps in a diesel engine
I've got a new intake installed by BMW along with the automatic transmission and rear axle oil change. After inspecting mine "old" flaps I found they're the new type. They look really strong. I can hardly imagine anything can happen to them. According to BMW they've not seen them failing. I'm not sure how true is that.
Anyway, removed intake will be de-flapped and will wait to be possibly installed - one day
P.S I don't post it to make people feel save. It is what it is. New type flaps after 120K (2005)

I had the newer ones also and they were strong and steady too when I took them out.
I just didn't want to risk as I had heard cases about broken new type swirl flaps.

Hi all,
I found about 1 year ago about this DIY. Then I only checked the swirl flaps, but 2 months ago I decided to get rid of them. I followed this excellent DIY without any problems.
I am so releaved ever since.
The engine works beautiful, no problems whatsoever after around 10.000 km.
So, big thanks Anfazin.
Hello..
Having just read the full 12 pages of this thread, im thinking i should do mine..
I own a 2005 525D Sport with 49k miles on the clock
After looking at REALOEM, it does not list my JAN 2005 build date as having the flaps? - is this correct?
You Have Selected: 01/2005 E60 525d Saloon M57N Europe Right hand drive
Production Code: NC52
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...51&hg=11&fg=40
Can anyone advise please?
Cheers
Rick

At least it lists the vacuum parts for your swirl flaps. Part 11 and 9.
Swirl flaps are not specifically listed in RealOEM for any model.

Thanks to the OP I removed mine last night and will sleep a bit easier knowing they cant come loose. Gave the EGR a good clean out too.
Excellent guide, only thing I done differently was to remove the entire lower flap housing, rather than just the flap itself.
