hey guys,


need help i have m172 wheels and when i wash the car i always try and sort the rims out, but they always have brake dust on them it is now to the stage that the dust will not remove, it is as if it has embeeded onto the wheel itself i have tried everything from hot soappy water to meguirs alloy cleaner and still the dust will not budge it is now doing my head in to the stage that i am thinking about scrapping the wheels and changging them for a new set but i like the look of the m172

sounds like the rims extensively got oxidations on them

take your car to a best known car detailing shop they can try to wipe them of with a special

solution that will take off the Metal particulars those penetrated by the brakes dust.



if you need to get a solution for that try to change your pads to hi-performance brake pads set

rather than Oem BMW ones. Bmw pads will always bring dust dirt and cause oxidation for your wheels



you can try to get mintex or ferrodo pads in your area.

will do pads need changed in 3000 miles or so will get new ones then till then i will probably leave the rims until i change the pads

Just returned from costco today and bought 5 litres of wonder wheels for ?7 ($15). If you put good coat on alloys and leave for 2 minutes and work in with brush supplyed. Do this bout 2-3 times and your wheels will be as good as new. Had same problem on my wifes car. Nothing would shift the brake dust that had "WELDED" itself to the alloy. If no costco nearby Halfords have it for ?10($20) for 1 litre(robbing b******s) .

In fact, a lot of what you think is welded-on brake dust is actually tar spots. You need to clean these off first, and most organic solvents will do the job; I use white spirit (turpentine substitute) as this is cheap and perfectly adequate. Usual precautions about gloves, enclosed spaces etc apply. If you really want to do a good job, take the wheel off the hub. Give it a once-over with a powerwasher to remove loose brake dust and road dirt.

Use an old toothbrush, dip it in solvent and scrub it into all the crevices. Then get one of the acid cleaners like Wonder wheels or Autoglym's Clean wheels and brush that in. Powerwash again THOROUGHLY, expecially if the wheel is still on the hub to avoid leaving nasty marks on the brake calipers and rotting your discs, and your wheel should be looking pretty good. Wash it with a sponge and normal car shampoo and allow to dry. Seal it with bodywork polish or (and I'm not convinced they are any better) specialist alloy wheel sealants. Reassemble if required and admire! Blueflightmedic.
