Usually the best way to do it is with a heat source like a heat gun or hair dryer. If you use a heat gun, be sure you don't bake the paint off of the car!
Once you heat the sticker, it should peel off fairly easily (don't rush the process). Once the sticker is off, you can use something like WD-40 to remove any glue residue that's left. After that, you can apply some wax or whatever you choose to protect the area where the solvent was used.
Having said all of that, what I usually do is ask the dealer to remove it (or better yet, I ask them not to put anything on at all...)

Hair dryer, dental floss and WD40 / white spirit / brush cleaner. Or ask your friendly dealer, as debadging is a no-cost option...

You'll only need the dental floss if the dealer "sticker" is raised like the numbers that came from the factory (like 550i, etc.) Usually, dealers just do stickers, not the more expensive raised emblems.
My dealer does a license plate frame and as much as I love to promote them (I do promote them in many ways), I don't like the look of any license plate frame so I remove it or ask them not to put it on. As we mentioned, usually the dealers are very cooperative if you ask them to remove it...
