You can buy Air-Con disinfectant which is a can of aerosol you put in the back of the car and press the button, the can then empties itself.
The car needs to have the recirculate on and the blower going and it disinfects and deodourises the system.

Steam will be no use as by the time it gets to the evaporator it will only be warm and will probably to more to assist the bacteria build up.

The bacteria that build up on the evaporator and air passages is legionella http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legionella

its not very nice.

My car is telling me I need to change the microfilter (see picture).

Question is:

Is there only one microfilter or two or even more?.

My car doesn't smell bad or anything so I ought to just be able to buy one from an auto part store and change it right? Its the one on the engine compartment right under the driver side windshield?

Please let me know there are more than one and if so they both need to be changed?

How do you make the message go away (or reset) in the computer?

Thanks for your help!

note that the microfilter has very little to do with any odours from AC. It only cleans the outside air before getting into your car.

Hi All,
I had a same problem but my smell is more like Gas smell (Exhaust Gas smell or something like that) I have 530i 2004 with 150 k km on it. It starts when it came back from Dealer when they fix Trans Leak and they changed the Gasket pan 3 weeks ago. the smell was strong specialy when you geting off the car you couls strongly smell around hood both side and under the car. I took the car back again and they kept it for 4 days, they did all inspection as they said but couldn't find any kind of leaks. so they disinfect the evap and mini spa my car. the service manager said if the smell still exist then it could be the evap cable inside burning and thats a big $$ job to do. also after the disinfection because they used a strong odoure so i can't smell anything, and no smell coming from the hood. i am afraid the smell comes back any suggestion would appreciated?!
