Does anyone know how to access the AC evaporator, the outside air intake and the microfilter?

I have experienced the bad AC odor recently, just for a few minutes after I start the car.

Yes, I have my microfilter changed regularly, actually quiet recently. And Yes, I will try to turn off the AC for a while to dry out the eveaporator moisture every once in a while.

But for now I've bought the special Desinfection spray they says to be sprayed over the AC evaporator.
I know that the E60 has 2 microfilters and I can locate the housing in the engine bay but before I will open them I would rather have someone to confirm or perhaps share some hints on how to do it right.

Any pics, instructions, etc....???

Thankx guys

Actually I want to do that too. but I never found a disinfectant spray that was recommeded and like you said... cuz i dont know where the AC evaporator is I never bothered to find out...

Let me know if it works... and if it cleans the smell... and what the procedure is...

I think someone has said that the air filters are by the passenger side under the windshield in the engine bay... the box thats there.. and the interior cabin filter is under the passsengers foot well... actually in the passenger foot well under the glove box.

There are 2 filters under the hood just in front of the windshield. They can be removed very easy. There is a plastic hex shaped bolt in the front outboard corner. 1/4 turn will release the cover. lift cover and remove filters. Turn fan on high speed and spray into opening on both sides.

Alternate(not as good) turn fan on high speed and turn on "Recirculation". Then spray into opening at the foot well in the inside of car.

In high humidity States learn to turn off the a/c (snowflake button) several minutes before shut down so that the moisture is blown off of the evaporator.

Where? What opening? I looked under there and counldnt locate in the passenger foot well... I want to have the car re circulate inside air and run the AC compressor and spray some dis-infectant in there.

Ok its really easy to access the AC evaporator from the engine compartment. This is where you can spray some dis-infectant spray to help get rid of AC smell.

I bought 2 bottles of this stuff http://www.autobarn.net/inpuair8oz.html and have sprayed about 1/3rd bottle in there each time. I've been doing it once a week and now the smell is almost all gone. I still have a bottle left so I might continue to do it a few more times to see if it will eliminate all the smell.

Thats why I want to see if i can find where if you put the car in recirculate mode where it sucks the inside air from. That way I can spray it in there... usually in other cars its in the passenger foot well but I cant seem to find it in the E60.

But anyways to access it from the engine compartment its basically what zen said... a quarter turn of a hex screw and un snap the long clip on the other side and the filter housing comes right out.

Then you spray a good amount of deodorizer where the arrow is pointing and let the AC run for a few minutes... turn off the AC and let the vent open again... spray some more into the vent... of course do it for both the passenger and drivers side... and repeat as necessary.
