Depends... i think most early versions have the capability to get mp3 enabled so shouldn't be an issue.
Just back from the dealership. Brought the bulliten about the MP3 retrofit. Got that done and the ipod interface was PLUG AND PLAY. It is awesome, loving it!

Wait so you got the mp3 retrofit done free even though you were out of warranty?
Well, I have 58k miles, i think i have some extended warrantee until 100,000. It was CPO. Either way, it was free.

My Ride: 2006 BMW 550i CPO bought in Jan 2009
I just picked up an 06 550 CPO it is mp3 capable (i burned my own mp3 cd with about 70 songs on it and it plays fine) but no CD changer. Is there a way to tell if the iPod interface will work without having to have the CD changer enabled in iDrive?

Must be nice. I'm still on my orignal warranty and getting my self-installed ipod interface to work cost me $700 plus the cost of the interface itself. I think plug-and-play is a myth. Congratulations!

same for many other members.. calling it a myth is false as it has and continues to work.

I think that it is plug and play for those of you with Navigation and the CCC. As far as I can tell if you have M-ASK and no navigation (like me and DrumGuruEC) then the iPod option must be enabled in the iDrive, even if you have a CD changer installed and operating.
Can anyone confirm this for me?
Thanks.
