Grill Shutters on Pre-LCI

I would like to install the shutters behind my Grill on my Pre-LCI 2007 E61.

Sofar i have found little info about it. It seems some cars have and some don't. But thats about it.

Havn't found anything in the RealOEM about this. So no part number either.

Also i have no idea what is electrically involved, mechanically it should be straight forward. (hope i don't have to remove the bumper)

Can anyone shed some light on this ?

OK one step furter have found the part on RealOEM :

The shutter is controlled via solenoid. When the engine coolant is warm enough (don't remember how warm), the solenoid "allows" the shutter to open by the draught when driving the car. Otherwise the solenoid "locks" the shutter in closed position.

I have done some more reading and came across this post from you : It shows the shutters clearly.

You have any idea to what the Solenoid is connected ? And if it would be possible to retrofit ?

It shows the wiring but I doubt its relevant for mine as this looks to be an LCI which has a different system.

Figured out where to connect the Solenoid. http://wds.spaghetticoder.org/en/svg...2747.svg?m=e60
Should be straight forward. One cable to pin 31 on the DDE and one to Fuse F04 .

But would I need some coding ? I presume it does.

Thank you.

Checked my DDE and I don't see anything connected to pin 31.

Sadly there is no picture how the pins are numbered but think i have figured out where pin 31 is :



Providing having the right parts it should be straight forward. Only thing to figure out if there is coding required. Hope not as I don't know anything of this.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of this besides preventing bugs from splattering inside?

Radiator shutter

The radiator shutter seals off the engine compartment from the outside and directs the cooling air under the engine.
When the vehicle is driven, the closed radiator shutter reduces the warm-up phase of the engine. In higher road speed ranges, this improves the CW value of the vehicle. This saves fuel and thus has an advantageous effect on the emissions. Furthermore, the faster heating of the coolant means that the full heat output of the vehicle can be called up earlier.
Components

Radiator shutter
Solenoid switch
Function

With the ignition off or in the event of a break in the activation cable, the radiator shutter is not locked. After engine start-up, the engine control unit switches the solenoid switch to earth and thus closes prevents the radiator shutter from opening.
When one or more of the following conditions exist when the vehicle is being driven, the magnetic lock for the radiator shutter is deactivated.
Coolant temperature > 90°C
Gearbox fluid temperature > 110°C
Engine oil temperature > 130°C
Power to map thermostat > 90% (only DME)
Electric fan active
Fault code memory entries

If there is an electrical fault in the assembly, the radiator blind lock is deactivated.
The radiator shutter lock is also deactivated if a defect is detected at the coolant-temperature sensor or electric fan.

Huh, interesting. So what's the downside of this? And why wouldn't it be stock on all our cars?
