As I could not find too much info on this topic, I made a DIY after replacing my front right wheel bearing today.
Background to this was that I heard a consistent "humming" noise/sound and the frequency followed the speed. I also had a slight vibration in the steering wheel which I first related to my cheap-ass wheels but later got a feeling it became worse. I tried looking at the bearings myself and they seemed rock solid but as I had the car serviced the other day I told them to have a peek on the front end as well and they told me that the exact bearing I suspected was failing actually was about to give up. BMW quoted me 170 EUR + VAT for parts but I ended up finding a good quality bearing at my local spare parts shop for 130EUR incl VAT. Good stuff
Anyway, here's the DIY. The 4 bolts were a biatch to remove due to the loctite and all the grime, and I wrecked a ratched in the process when extending it with a steel pipe to get more torque, but with brute force and plenty of patience I finally got them out and the end result is a silky smooth ride

After this one I also got rid of the swirl flaps so it was indeed a productive day. Big up to Anzafin for the great DIY!
BTW, mods can remove my previous post about hints for wheel bearing. I could not modify or delete it myself.

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.

Great documentation!
It takes some courage make DIY projects for suspension or breaks and roller bearings touch both of them. Three hours work with jammed bolts sounds tough work, but it feels so good to get this kind of project done.
