I realize I'm resurrecting a very old post here, but I did want to share my experience and thank rodybmw for his very thoughtful post. I am not at all mechanically inclined, but I was able to reduce the bumper gap in my 2010 550i to 3.5 mm, from about 5 mm. This doesn't sound like much -- and it isn't -- but it was always frustrating to me that the gap was so wide: it just seemed sloppy.
My M-tech bumper is OEM, so I didn't think that the foam method would really apply. Instead, I simply used 5 2 mm steel washers and slid them under the panel that rodybmw illustrated. I couldn't find wider washers, but I think I may be able to close the gap even more by slide a polyurethane washer under the steel washer to lift the bumper just a little bit more.
