In the on-going 545i saga.
In my latest weekly error code, I had a "low coolant" indication. Went to fill and it took more than the usual half quart, so I knew the day had come.My car had developed a small leak in the expansion tank. The crack was top to bottom in the front section. Dealer had it for 130 bucks, took about 20 minutes to swap in. I would suggest just changing it if you have over 5 years or 70k miles to avoid the inconvenience and be able to shop a better price for it.

More info-
If you plan in advance you can buy it far cheaper on-line. I think RM european has it for around $77 plus shipping, others may know of cheaper sources. Two torx fasteners will need to be removed first to free it from the fenderliner. Then, the hoses are a breeze to remove, just lift the small wires and then carefully wiggle the fitting until it begins to come loose from the resevoir. Installation is reverse. Then just re-fill with coolant/water mix. Use care not to overfill. If your vehicle is over 5 years old this is probably nearing the end of the service life of the original unit.
