Interesting - mod. Is there only 1 filter?
Surely if it was going to cause some damage BMW would have recalled this item? So under that logic isn't it fine leaving the current ones?

There is only one filter, the dealer I got mine from knew nothing about it requiring changing and according to him it wasn't issued as a recall

i would change your filter !!! my car is an 04 530d and when i took the filter out it was of the foam "hair curler type" the foam was all matted and no air could have possibly have been getting through it,
it was very clogged up with black gunk and could not be cleaned.
the new part which was a different design is much better and i am sure enables the engine to be less stressed, as this part makes a difference to the turbo for ?15 it is an esential part to replace i think.
see my earlier post as i was nearly ripped off by bmw who said i needed to change the housing too which didnt need changing as that design has not changed just the drop in filter.
hope this helps.

I have an '05 530d and I'm planning to:-
1. replace breather filter
2. replace air filter
3. clean the MAF
Could someone direct me to a picture-guided DIY for the above? I understand there a quite a few parts to be removed, but I'm unsure of the exact steps. Just don't want to be stuck halfway through.....
thanks

You should find sufficient info in various posts but anyway I made a DIY when I changed air filter and checked the breather dito a few months back. Let me know if you need any more info. GL

Is it possible that a blocked or partly blocked breather of the old type causes oil to get out of the manifold on the side of the engine?
I am talking about a tiny amount, i.e. no drops under the car etc.

Tesh,
Just been to the $tealers for a replacement filter for my 530d. Of course, they tried to sell me a complete unit until I asked for just the filter. I noticed that on thier parts system, they didn't have the filter shown separately as it does on RealOEM, although the part number was available further down the list. Perhaps the 535 has the filter integral with the body.
I got the parts guy to show me the complete unit for the 530d, and it was just the filter, cover and gaskets in one bag (?37). The filter came with gaskets. Perhaps a trip to your local $tealer to have a look before you rip off the top of your engine!
