Been in to my local dealers today and the parts guy told me that its a different part no. to the 530d, it's also ?40+ compared to ?17
They have only ever had 3 in stock in the last 3 years' so seems to think it isn't a serviceable part.
He has ordered one in for me to have a look at.
Does anyone know if I need to change this?

do not let the bmw stearlership rip you off you only need the filter which is available seperatly as i got mine from bmw bolton for 17 pounds uk you do not need the new filter housing as it is exactly the same as the one fitted to your car (530d 2004), all you need to do is clean the original housing, fit the new filter and replace thats it !!
if you want to get the 40 quid part then do so but i told you so when you realisse you have been ripped off!!
i have a 530d 2004 i bet the 535 525 are also the same part as it is the same engine.

For the 15 minutes it takes to get at the filter, it is worth having a look at what is fitted to your engine now - if its a "foam" type, and the replacement is a plastic vortex type, then I'd swop it. If your car is fitted with a vortex type already, then I'd put it back in and not bother replacing it.
Just because the $tealer hasn't sold any recently doesn't mean it isn't a problem. A couple of years ago no-one thought these were any trouble, but here we are discussing possible high bills if we don't replace, and the $tealers are now replacing it too as a matter of course. Now, if only they would admit that swirl flaps are a problem . . . . . .

When I got to the filter, I found that it was the hard plastic type, so cleaned it and popped it back in.
Job done and saved ?40........bonus

Great PDF guide, I did mine this weekend - by the way if you ask the deal for an oil seperator he will only charge you ?17.90ish - the plastic casing is a seperate item.

Just checked my engine breather and glad it was the modified type. Also changed the air filter whilst at it. It took about four hours and this included a trip to the local hardware shop to get a torx 45 bit which I thought I had. Even then I could only get 3 out of 4 strut brace bolts out so had to work with the brace on. I'll pick up a better tool for next time and this should take half the time, if that.
Does anyone know if the breather needs to be changed or does it just need to be checked every service?
The PDF instructions were excellent and with this and another forum I have gained the confidence to work on my car. The only previous mechanical experience i've had is changing a car battery so the forums have helped me out alot. If anyone had said I'd be doing this type of work when I bought the car I would have thought you were crazy. So big thanks to all posting info and DIYs and hopefully i'll be able to post up a helpful DIY soon.
