Great job BenAnd, looks clean & terrific! I'm pretty sure it took you a long time to go through all that steps. Just want to add on about the sensor since I changed the rear a few days ago. My service indicator listed 4300 miles. Unfortunately, I could not reuse the sensor since it was very slightly worn. If I had changed a few hundred miles earlier, the sensor could have been reused. The pads had about 3-4mm left.

For the rear rotors removal, the emergency handbrake is released, nothing else needs to be done (don't forget to choke front wheels). Make sure to have a mallet/hammer to whack the rotor since it will be rusted onto the hub. I applied some antiseize lube on the hub where the rotor is touching rotor. Be careful not to strip the (M8 x 14 mm) allen bolt. Personally, think it is better to replace the bolt new everytime the rotor is changed since it gets rusty & corroded.

For removing the parking brake shoes, I have read somewhere that it may be necessary to release the parking bake cable tension underneath the parking brake handle from the armrest console. I'm not sure since I havn't removed the parking brake shoes and I'm sure BenAnd can touch the subject more in details

From my experience with Volvo, you have to unscrew (lose) that screw to release the parking brake shoes along with the star wheels inside the rear brake rotor. Then rear brake rotor will come off easier.

Thanks for posting the nice pictorial, BenAnd.
Yours was the only one I can find on the net regarding E60 brakes.

I'm planning on doing this for my brother's 2006 525 E60 and have some questions.
I read somewhere that when compressing the brake piston to install the new pads, it has to be pushed and rotated, can someone clarify this?
Also, where is the master brake cylinder located in the engine compartment?

Master cylinder location.

You can push piston in (with proper tool or using a big C clamp) without rotating it. Just make sure your master cylinder is open and check fluid level to prevent overflow.

+1, I can confirm this is the case also.. most VW and Audi's seem to have the push and rotate set up..
