The AGM (advanced glass mat technology) battery is the same battery available at the dealership, but for a lot less money.
If you know how to use NCSExpert and EDIABAS, you can register the battery and change amp-hr for proper charging of the new battery by the vehicle.

My Ride: 2005 BMW 545i, Silver Grey, Sport Package, R. Shades, Cold Pkg, Sat. Rad., Prem. Sound.
I'm using the Deka Exact Fit and no block of wood is needed; there is another threaded hole where the pole can screw into to hold the new battery in place.

Glad I read the whole thread as I was just going to say this. It depends. I've done both a non-exact spec replacement and exact. WIth the non-exact (lower CCA or other electrical spec) you may find faults show up without this "re-programming" but with an exact replacment no problems even without reprogramming.
The EXIDE OEM battery is one heafty battery for the 6er at 62 pounds. Most aftermarket replacements run in the 40 pound region (this is for the larger of the three OEM sizes available).

Well I had the experience of my battery dying on me while at the car wash this past weekend. I called the sealer and they wanted $500 plus to exchange the battery. I started looking online for information on how to do this and I found a ton of opinions...from doom and gloom to piece of cake. After reading through many posts on multiple sites and what was described in the manual, I decide I could do it myself. I purchased a Werker 95R from Batteries Plus and was on my way.
Many people warned that the battery needed to be registered with the car or I would lose all Idrive control if I do it myself. I can tell you now that is all BS and you can do it yourself in about 30 minutes or less. I took a little longer because I took pictures at each step along the way.

Does any one knows if its neccesary to replace the battery at the dealer due to a programing requiered also?
Please advice their quote is for $ 480 to $640 on a 2008 528i depending on the battery size.
Any help please.
Thank you.

No. Picked a cheapo battery off advancedautoparts for 80 bucks and it works fine. Yah, it might die in an year or two, but I am ok with that.

There are dozens of battery threads but I still went with a factory battery and registered it. The battery cost me $185 from Tischer BMW and I picked it up to save on shipping. It took me all of 5 minutes to install and shouldn't take you any longer if you have ever put a battery in a car before.
I drove without registering it for 2 weeks with no issues, but when I had my car at my local dealer for the brake recall I found out the registration would only cost $65. I figured if the last one made it 7 years it was worth the extra few buck upfront.

Went to Autozone and purchased the direct OEM sealed replacement for $159.00 plus $10 to install. I didn't have it programed and it is running great with full function of all electronics. For good measure, I will have Simon program it in the next couple of weeks.
