Basically that is what you do.
I worked from under the car as well so had to remove the 2 underbody sheilds.
To get the lever from the car you need to rotate the white bearing 90 degrees clockwise after removing the shift rod from the lever.

If you look at the second photo in the original thread the shift arm (linkage) is being held up by the coathanger.

I just did this mod.

All I can say is before you start this please buy the shifter, a new bearing and a couple of spare circlips. I didn't need the spare circlips but I can see why you would need them. A new bearing would be good incase you have an older car and also you are more than likely going to crack the one one (I didn't but you could easily do it). Also when putting the circlip back it may help for you to use some thread attached through one of the holes on the circlip, just in case it slips when you are putting things back.

Also please remember to hold the link arm up well. I let it go once and was lucky to be able to fish it back up with a very long stiff wire.

Best mod ever. This will definatly be my next mod.

I was reading in another forum that the orginal one is bended - if you change it to the Z4 3.0 one the gear knob is in another position than before.

Can anyone confirm this?

Many thanks,
Tim

I tweaked the z4 lever to suit myself. It's easy enough to bend in a vice if you are brave. Now sits where I find it most comfortable to use

yup. at least on a 545, the shift pattern is considerably further forward and to the right of stock. One way around this is to bend the Z4 lever; another, which I'm currently researching, is replacing the selector rod with a shorter one. I have to get under my car and do research on the length of the stock selector rod first.

OK thanks.

I don't have a vice but maybe a BIG hammer will do. Otherwise it should be possible to find someone to do the job.

can you expand on this a bit? how did you clamp it in without breaking the plastic ball? i tried to bend it yesterday without success. I am giving up on the shorter selector rod idea, i took one look at the list of things that has to come off to access the transmission and decided I would be better off finding a way to bend the rod.

I clamped the base in a vice (not the ball) and used a 4ft pole as a lever and this was large enough in bore get the whole shifter inside it. So it was the section below the pivot ball that was bent until I was happy with the throw. I would avoid bending it too many times but it seemed to survive my tweaking without any signs of weakening. I've tweaked all the shifters in my previous BMW's using this method and never had a problem.
