Great info here and great mod! Thanks and congratulations!
BTW, I have a MSport shift lever knob waiting for the installation, but I just can't get the original knob out! I've pulled like a crazy but it doesn't get off?!
I must be doing something wrong...

Chesney72.
Is the shift lever removal simply a case of removing the circlip and lifting out or is there more to it?
According the the parts diagram there is a bearing in the arm.
Any more feedback on how it feels?

My Ride: E61 sold nice E91 335i Sport Touring now
If you take the clip off then lever the linkage out of it with a wide flat bladed screwdriver. If you drop the clip then chances are you'll need to jack it up and retrieve it from undertray. That's assuming you can find it!! I lost one but luckily had a clip in the garage that fits perfectly and is easier to remove!
Had it for a couple of weeks now and the throw is noticeably shorter. my wife has been driving it and I asked her if she felt it was heavier and she said she hasn't noticed any difference in weight.
All I need now is to find a DIY guide to making the centre console move out the way on a hinge cos I find it too high and is where I want my elbow when changing gear

I just removed the centre console, I got fed up with it getting in the way.
Its ok design for an auto but no good for a manual. Interior looks a mess but I'm much happier driving the car and for me thats all that counts.
I'll order the lever and change it at the same time as the CDV which I got this week from Speed-religion.

Fitted the Z4 shifter today.
All I can say is I haven't stop smilling since trying it.
I've been so dissapointed with the shift feel and quality since buying my 530D, yes it has high milage 115K, but the shift was so sloppy and the throw so
long I have regreted not at least trying an auto.
All that has changed now, the shift is so short and precise I imagine its like shifting in a Porsche or Ferrari (not a flappy paddle one )
Another plus is because the time to change gear has nearly halved, the revs don't drop as much so I can come off the clutch much quicker and still be smooth.
I can't wait to go out again tomorrow.

I worked from under the car as well so had to remove the 2 underbody sheilds.
To get the lever from the car you need to rotate the white bearing 90 degrees clockwise after removing the shift rod from the lever.
