You can't burn the paint with Griot's Random Orbital, hence the reason they call it "random". It doesn't stay put in one section. It creates torque as it spins, thus forcing the orbital to move around. It's really easy and safe. Check out their site. I believe they guarantee it won't burn your paint, no matter how much force you apply.
As for claying, it's easy. You just spray down the area with a spray detail wax or soapy water and wipe back and forth. Fold over the clay every so often and continue until the car is complete. But you're right, since you've only had your car for 5 weeks, you don't need to. After 6 months (or when the summer is over), I would.
PS - Any chance you're going to the meet this weekend at Captree?

Looks very good. I've noticed a pretty big difference claying a brand new car. You'd be surprised to see the contaminents that can "eat away" at a car's finish. Put your hand in a thin sandwich bag and run your fingernail across the car. You'll EASILY be able to tell whether your car needs to be clayed. I tend to have OCD when it comes to my cars.

Excellent results.. 
I'll probably get my car detail on may 20th for $135 (Full Detail=Interior, Exterior, and Engine Steam Clean.
(Sounds like a good deal right?).
