For 10K I would consider it. That is less than the depreciation of a new 5'r in one year. I owned a 2003 3.0 with sport pkg and it was a great vehicle. The handling was great for that type of vehicle. The only other SAV's of this caliber are the Mercedes and RR. Lexus handles pitifully and has poor brakes.

I had 2001 X5 4.4i with sport package and it was very nice and quick car in summer, but when winter started - here is when problems started as well. First alternator died (which was not really winter related), then it gets worse - oil separator got frozen and valve cover gasket blew up. And finally transmission started to leak - only one seal needed to be replaced, but that was about 10h of work to replace it. So I said screw it and moved on to 2005 X5 4.4i
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention what 2001 was purchased with 58k miles only.

So were looking at buying a SUV but all the European models are a little out of our price range. We came across this 2001 X5 on ebay and may be interested I have never had a BMW over 90k so I don't know what to expect just want to see if I can get some inputs from the experts.!!!!

Beware the X5 oil sludge problem. You may want to google that and do your research....

I'd get a used lexus rx300. More reliable and better gas mileage.

I'd stay away from the X5 w/V-8; The 6 cyl are more reliable.

If you really want an X5 I'd look for a younger version w/fewer miles. They would cost more but better to spend the extra $5K now than to buy an older high mileage vehicle and spend that much in repairs and maintenance.

To be perfectly honest, the Lexus and Infiniti SUVs have a better repair record IF you could stand to have one parked in your driveway.
