true.dat.

your 545 starts at $55,800.
in sweden the 545 starts at 519,000 SEK.

todays exachange rate is 6.79 sek to the dollar (www.xe.net)

soooo.....

you pay $55,800.
we pay $76,435 for the same car.

now im sure its not as black and white as that - our price includes our 25% (yeah, you read right, 25%) sales tax, and is probably not equipped the same as yours.

and besides, its not exactly free to insure a car like that (yeah, we insure our cars, not the drivers)

but i bet with all the variables factored out - we still pay a hefty sum more to own a bmw.

so quit your crying - its only fair that we get the better looking cars! (j/k)

OK here is my theory.? BMWNA is BMW AG's biggest customer.? BMWNA generates a huge volume of business and in return gets the cheapest BMWs on the planet.? They pass these savings on to the dealer network an some of it trickles down to us.? Really,? we do get our cars cheaper than anywhere else.

Now in order to manage this volume from a production stand point,? they introduce the package concept.? A handful of colors, only three trims and two interior colors.? Hence no BMW individual,? no choosing your options and no M sport package unless they are at premium that BMWNA doesn't feel is worthwhile marketing.? Anyone with the dosh can surely buy it in Europe and ship it over.? Then have your local bodyshop install it.

And they will likely offer it - only it we be a few years into production of the car. Remember it's a pretty niche pproduction for them at that point so they can likely profit from it a little more if they hold off a little, build some demand and then release it when e60 sales start to wane.

They want us chomping at the bit for it....and it's working...

seriously. bloody excellent system. lets keep the lazy people alive with the money from the people who work hard and those who in other societies would be called "rich" (but cant, as the government takes all their money away), nicely tucked away by shoving ton after ton of paperwork at them so they can keep enough to put food on their families (the words of the great George Bush).

hows that - socialism in a sentence. a run on sentence, but a sentence none the less.

I was just looking at numbers today, and for a moderately equipped (read: not everything) 545, the government will be taxing me 11,400SEK/month (almost 1700USD). Tell me its better elsewhere... give me faith in the rest of society.

Narf, we in Europe have a tendency to remember the burdens our government put on us only when we have to pay our taxes or when we compare prices of our goods to american prices! But rarely anybody recalls our taxes when we go to first class hospitals, totally free of charge, when our sons go to the school and to the University totally free or paying few hundred euros per year, when our municipality take care of our children in the kindergartner free of charge.

I?ll be happy to pay less taxes but my personal complain is not about the amount of taxes I pay (and for me is quite a substantial amount of money), instead I complain about the waste of money my government (and several others) is doing with my money!

And yes, yankees can buy cars and bikes and electronics and gasoline much cheaper than us but we cannot compare US with small Sweden or overcrowded Italy. We are in a different world, maybe better maybe not, but I personally will have a lot of problems in adapting to the american way of life. I prefer to go over there just for holidays, as I usually do.

Don't need socialism, doesn't work.
But you pay a lot in Sweden.
What we pay over here is even more then shameless. The absolute basic version of the 545 hits the price list at ? 80400,- so that's well over $ 100000 that we pay for the same car.

have a look at the Dutch BMW pricelist

you have quite a point, however i could pay for private hospitals, private schools, etc. with all the tax money im paying. instead of improving hospitals and schools, god knows what our governments are doing with our money. sure its nice that all these things are "free", but that doesnt quite cut it with me - i want them to be good as well. Swedish schools are pathetic, and the hospitals are even worse. My father from cancer at age 62 because the hospitals refused to do an MRI. They saved 1500SEK (200bux) and my father lost his life. This from paying well over 50% income tax his whole life, along with luxury tax (for owning stuff), corporate tax (for doing business in the country), employers taxes (for his employees). the list goes on.

education should be free for everyone - and those who bother to study hard, get good jobs, make lots of cash, shouldnt be punished. sure the system in the US isnt exactly the ideal one, but in my opinion, its much better than our fundamentally flawed socialist regime.

im moving the second i get the chance.

and im bringing my m-sports kit with me!

back to cars....

In Italy the price list for the 545i Eccelsa, the only one available, is 68600,00 euros.

The spec is top of the range, with almost everything included: Dakota leather, active steering, 18" alloys, professional nav, cd changer, PDC, electric mirrors, sport suspension, adaptive lights, bi-xenon, full electric seats and electric steering wheel.

So, it seems you in Holland pay at least 25% more than we do! Seems too big a difference inside the EU. WHy don?t you buy cars in Germany, then?
