still looking......now a 06 550i without a warranty. i can get the car for 20k. it was just looked over by a dealer.
how much risk am i looking at? i've had several 3 series and m3 before, with over 100k without any major issues.....

Spending 1K just for 4K miles coverage does not seem like a sound investment. These engines and transmissions are rock solid (with proper maintenance). If driven well and the car has no known issues, I'd put the 1K into an interest bearing account and use that seed money for repairs. I'm almost ready to bet that you will still have the 1K in the bank, after 4K, but in life there is nothing certain except for taxes and death. I suggest you do your homework and make the call. If you find lots of posting citing $3K and up repairs at your mileage range, I would try to get a warranty. If you don't find major issues in your mile range, I'd save the money.
