i looked at a 07 550i that is out of warranty. dealer offered some generic extended warranty, but you pay minimum 1k and it will only cover upto 4k, and who knows what hoops you have to go through.

what kind of expense would one expect to pay for:
oil change
brakes
trans or motor rebuild
i drive failure
programminng

do the e60 require much computer programming and updates? how does the programming get charged?

i've owned bmws before, and done my own repairs and maintenance. but it seems with the sophisticated computers in the newer models, that it's becoming harder to work on.

1. oil, brakes, tune up, easy to do diy. save $$
2. trans & motor depending on the level of rebuild. spend $$$$ (trans & motor are pretty solid)
3. i drive, no clue.

if possible try to get history report from bmw. i think warranty direct is reputable, google various warranty comps.

good luck!

Spending 1K just for 4K miles coverage does not seem like a sound investment. These engines and transmissions are rock solid (with proper maintenance). If driven well and the car has no known issues, I'd put the 1K into an interest bearing account and use that seed money for repairs. I'm almost ready to bet that you will still have the 1K in the bank, after 4K, but in life there is nothing certain except for taxes and death. I suggest you do your homework and make the call. If you find lots of posting citing $3K and up repairs at your mileage range, I would try to get a warranty. If you don't find major issues in your mile range, I'd save the money.

Have fun

I would never own an E60 out of warranty.

I already had a full automatic tranmission replacement. Luckily under warranty, it would have been big money.

I guess it's a good thing that you were under warranty.

At what mileage did your transmission fail? Would you consider yourself a "hard" driver or what was BMW's explanation about premature failure? I've had previous transmission problems on both of my former 7 series and that was part of my decision making to buy my '07 with the 6 cyl.

This is why I have never bought into the "lifetime transmission fluid" claim. I have changed my transmission fluid every 40K miles and I have never had a transmission failure in 11 years of BMW driving, including two cars with 100K+. My newest has 35K miles on the clock now and I will definitely have the dealer replace the transmission, differential, and transfer case fluid at 40K. It's better to spend the $400~500 every few years for prevention, than $8K later for replacement.
