My Ride: 2006 550I: Titanium Silver, Anthracite Interior/Headliner, Cold Weather/Sports Package, Comfort/Ventillated Seats, Logic 7, SMG, Active Steering, Comfort Access, Fold Down Rear Seats, Heated Rear Seats, Navigation, Head Up Display, Satellite Radio...
Thumbs up

I asked a local dealer in L.A. for a quote via the internet. This of course will have to be a special order vehicle. Here's what I asked for: Titanium Silver/Black Leather...

SMG, Sports Package, Cold Package, Premium Sound, Active Steering, Rear Side Airbag, Comfort Access, Fold Down Rear Seat, Rear Seat Heating, Active Cruise Control, Navigation System, and Head Up Display.

MSRP with $1,000 gas guzzler tax comes out to $72,405. They quoated me $69,405, a $3,000 discount.

However, I also asked for the Rear Deck Spoiler (MSRP: $430) $1,160, Illuminated Door Sills (MSRP: $750) $1,081, and of course the M Aero Kit (MSRP: $1,690) $3,269. They are asking a total price including parts and labor of $5,510.00.

Selling Price: $74,915

I understand that it would probably be much cheaper to purchase these items as an aftermarket item and installed by a reputable body shop. However, it's much easier to pull the wool over the sheep's clothing (WIFE) if the car is delivered to me with all the extras . In other words, it is more difficult to justify the extras when you're married with children.

Ok...What is a BMW CCA discount? What does CCA stand for? What is VPC? What does VPC stand for? AM I GETTING A RAW DEAL?

CCA means Car Club of America. By the BMW CCA discount I believe that you mean the "rebate" BMW NA gives to BMW CCA members. The rebate for a 5 Series is $1,000, BUT you must have been a member of BMW CCA for at least one continuous year immediately before you purchased the car. To find out more about the rebate and BMW CCA, go to www.BMWCCA.org. I strongly recommend that you join the club even if you won't be eligible for the rebate on you new BMW.

You know, for another $10K you could get an M5!

From personal experience, you will take a bath on all the options when you sell the 550i (not that resale is a reason to buy a car). Given the better resale value of a lightly optioned M5, you may actually be better off with the M5--just food for thought!

Thank you for the information. I'm looking into becoming a member of the CCA.

The M5 is certainly a beautiful car; however, the price of fuel out here in California is not exactly ideal for driving a V10. Of course, why would you worry about the cost of gasoline if you can afford an M5...correct? I just wouldn't want my M5 vandalized by some green activist (rampant in CA)...The bottom line is, MY WIFE SAID NO!

Couple of minor points to consider about those add ons. You'll pay DMV registration fees on everything that's put on the car prior to delivery -- each and every year. In addition, you'll also pay sales tax on the installation labor.

OTOH, if you install those add ons after you take delivery, you won't pay either.

Excellent Point! That makes a lot of sense. I may reconsider installing the extras prior to delivery. Thanks!
