I prefer the 996 and Cayman lights more than the 997s but I do LOVE the 997tt body all around more than the 996tt. So only if they used the 996tt headlights and the 997tt body then it'll be a WOWOWOWOOWOW car for me.

While you may prefer the looks of the 996, all of the reviews I have read say the 997 is a big leap over the 996 in terms of dynamics. IMHO, the 996 was pretty ugly, especially the interior - the interior in the 997 is very nice with much nicer materials.
