wait for the auto bild test youll see what im talking about. With the traction contol in DYNO mode it wll smoke the m5
The E63 will be superior to the E55 at autobahn speeds - that's where the E55 gets killed by the M5 now. The E63 may very well match or do slightly better at speed than the M5, depending on the drag. It may also do slightly better from a stop, due to the higher torque. The higher torque doesn't do anything for you once you're rolling - that's all about HP, weight, and drag.
The new 'vette will 'smoke the M5', anyone will agree to that. The E63 may be slightly quicker, but it will be a close call either way.

Not a chance it will 'smoke the M5'. Not unless somebody has some information they're not telling us about. The E63 spec is 514 HP, vs 507 for the M5, but the E63 has an auto tranny, which will give higher drivetrain losses. Bottom line is that the HP to the wheels, and the HP/weight ratio will be very similar. With Euro spec LC, the M5 won't lose too much to the E63 off the line either. Autobilds most recent test of the E55 vs M5 showed very similar numbers up to 100 kph.

Correct. This is because of EU safety regulations. The 55kompressor motors sat too high and any pedestrian hit in a direct collision was likely to suffer as there were no crumple zones below the bonnet. With the 63 engine they have adressed this issue.
Due to the design of supercharges, it is no longer possible to mount one without breaching the new safety measures by the eu.
Therefore the new 6.3 engine will eventually get a bi-turbo configuration , similar to that of the 335i (as in two turbos at the sides of the engine rather than mounted on top)... Expect the sl63 amg to carry this engine first in 2008
correct, smoke might be too strong a word. Nevertheless it will be quicker from the start, because the 7g speedshift gearbox is incredibly efficient for an auto, and the abundance of low end torque

I agree the E63 will probably beat the M5 from a dig, especially here in the US. It will be interesting to see if BMW responds to this development with something new...
However, I wonder if the launch with a manual shifting M5 is enough to make up the time it loses when shifting up the gears as compared to the SMG. You see, the SMG will shift quicker to 2nd, 3rd, then 4th in a quarter mile run but the manual is [maybe] quicker at the launch. We'll have to wait.

I'll bet the carmags can equal the SMG shift times, and better the SMG launch by a few tenths. That's what has happened on every SMG tested to date. Remember, these are basically pro drivers who test the car multiple times and report on their best run. Not a 'real world' scenario - in the real world, the SMG will be quicker 95% of the time.
With SMG you'll have more consistency in the car's performance (in this case, acceleration from a dig) and have that performance reproducible across a much wider range of drivers.
As for a pro driver being able to row the gears of a manual as fast as the SMG...the only way I see this happening is if the driver hard shifts, that is, no depression of the clutch pedal. OUCH!

It's so pretty inside-out. Hard decision to make between M5 and E63
