you do like winding up BMW fans don't you 700700.

I think 'amazingly beautiful' and 'faster than the M5' might be going a bit far, but I would like a quick go in one

How do they manage to get so much torque - 630nm vs 520nm in the M5, with only 7 extra hp?
Supercharging, turbocharging, merc does it all . You don't know what is their speciality. A NA engine will always have a lower level of torque than a FI engine. IMO that is the best combination: similar bhp and torque numbers AND NA, that's the key to a good (racing breed if oyu want) engine.

BetterMakeWay, you do realize that this particular AMG engine, which is an AMG design and build as opposed to an update of an MB unit, is normally aspirated don't you?

I do believe this is an amazing engine that AMG developed from the ground up. I saw one of the TV show reviews of the AMG process and testing of this engine and was duly impressed. But... and this is a big but for me, it is not in a car that I like. It may happen one day, but right now this MB design is very ordinary, not leading or cutting edge. I would like it to be more edgy so that we had more and better choices. I want MB to get out of their comfort zone and do more in the design and handling (I know they have improved some in this area as well) arena. It like sports, the better your competitor the better you do. This goes for other car mfrs as well. I do want to see the Japanese do better in more that just electronics or engines. Get better chassis and design going as well. Break out of your BOXES.

Ok off my soap box

Uuups i thought it was still supercharged. Anyway then the higher output of torque must come from the displacement. If that's not it i dunno what is.

I'm really not a fan of the E-class. It looks a bit like an old man's car I think... But the engine that's an other story...

Yes...analizing the data makes you think that the engine itself must be a masterpice. Like the M5 v10 engine. With 2 cyls short, but with 1300 more ccs they managed to get a bit more power but alot more torque. Interesting.
If they fit that engine in the SLK making the SLK 63 AMG or CLK then well that's like a car bomb.

Now gimme that m5.

PS: wait i googled it. It seems there will be a CLK63 AMG but with watered down power to 480 bhp. Too bad.

hahah that made me laugh..

its a naturally aspirated engine, and the car looks like nothing else on this world its HOOOOOOOOOOT

IMO the new engine also sounds much better than the m5... although to my ears it is not quite as nice as the sound thet the 55k cars make...

Besides the 6.3litre v8 does not suffer from lack of low end torque like the e60 m5 engine

confirmed are : S63 AMG, ML 63 AMG, SLK 63 AMG, CLS 63 AMG, CLK 63 AMG, E63 AMG

Love that 6.2L motor.
As for calling this a slush box, I guess the same could be said about the M5 SMG, a manual transmission at heart but no dedicated clutch pedal to stomp on.

I know the CLS 63 and E 63 both have paddle shifters as standard (not sure, but perhaps all AMG cars with this motor may get them).

To the poster thinking about getting the CLS 55:
MB has already stopped production on that car. Preowned are the only ones you'll find or anything left on dealer's lots. It seems MB is beginning to sway towards turbos and leaving superchargers behind. High revving motors with the help a couple of turbos to help with low-end torque.
