My Ride: 06 750Li, & 03 E500 & 06 550i
I have had a few of both MBs and BMW and I can honestly say I always end up back with BMW as is the case now but my wife and I have two MBs and one BMW. Both of us enjoy the BMW so much more. My perspective is that in order to get anything close in handling to a BMW you must get the AMG, whereas all BMWs seem to be much more fun to drive and all handle quite well without sacraficing the ride.
Secondly, while MBs interiors might seem more luxurious, the seats, leather and comfort are not nearly the quality of BMW. )The leather isnt as soft and the seats arent as comfortable(cushioning).
I had our 750Li in for an alignment and airbag light-warranty. The dealer gave me a 2008 528i with 4000 miles on it as a loaner. While it didnt have the power of my 2003 E500, it handled better, it drove nicer and the ride was so much more pleasant. I know we are taking 2003 to 2008, but here is another comparison.
Our other MB is a 2008 C350 Sport. Great car, great power for its size and great handling with the Sport package but a hair bit bumpy-harsh. I had a 2008 328i Series loanerm, again in all forms the BMW was so much more fun and enjoyable to drive. Our C350 is a little larger and had more power, but in every other way the BMW was better.
So by comparison, it seems it has to be an AMG to compare and then I would take the M5 because ride and handling will be better, plus lets not forget a little pocket change left over with BMW when you take it in for the complimentary service, not the case with MB since they stopped that in 2005.

My Ride: 2009 Alpine White e92 M3
I did some runs with Vegasthrashed's(Joe) E63 AMG awhile back. I think his e63 is tuned with exhaust and scoops but not sure about the ECU and my M5 was bone stock. I would say we were pretty close on both runs. He had TrinityAutosport(Joe) on the passenger side on the first run and I think I beat him 1/4 car length. On the second run, Joe transferred in my car and VT beat me at about the same car length or more.

My Ride: 2005 Titanium Gray 545 Sport Package
My old coworker swore by the E63, my personal favorite is the CLSAMG, engines are very close but I like the long styling of the saloon. I remember watching the Top Gear episode on the CLS those are some quick saloons to say the least. Yeah American Service Center is a weird name it always makes me smile when I hear there commercials on the radio.
