2010 Jaguar XFR - Short Take Road Test
A new 510-hp V-8 makes this cat an M5-eater.

BY AARON ROBINSON
May 2009

Known lately for its sleepy, leaping cats, Jaguar has taken its fangs off the nightstand and stuck them back in. The sporty ?R? designation gets pinned to the tail of the pretty and still-pretty-new $52,000 XF, the mid-size sedan below the big XJ. The result: 510 tech-infused horsepower and a price hike to $80,000. The driving sophistication is high, and some test numbers we managed to quickly extract during the XFR?s introduction are 10 degrees north of wow: 4.3 seconds to 60 mph, a quarter-mile pierced in 12.7 seconds at 115 mph. The M5 flinches.

But then again, this is the 2010 model. The F10 M5 will come out a few years later but will probably be faster.

True, but it's going to be pretty easy for Jaguar to increase the power output on an already forced induction engine (the XF-R is of course supercharged) and the XF is already a very solid handling car. Furthermore, the XF-R will be here reasonably soon, whereas the F10 M5 may be a while away if prior 5er launches are anything to go by. Key thing is that if anything is going to push BMW to stay at the top of its game it's strong competition and the XF-R seems to provide that. It's car enthusiasts who win when quality product hits the marketplace and keeps everyone on their toes.

Agree competition is good. The new CTS-V is already keeping BMW on their toes, a true beast. Modding potential is through the roof.

Agree!! But rumors said about TT in the new M5, of course all speculation. I for one still support NA engines as they IMHO receive all the kudos as a technical achievement but also as driving pleasure in engine response, compared to a turbo or blower enhanced engine.

I test drove the 420 bhp XF Supercharged and was impressed. It was very powerful and its handled well. The interior was also very beautiful and well put together. I don't know how it will hold up but it seemed like a quality product. It still did not quite have the sharp handling of my 550 but it was impressive -- much more so than the A6, the GS, the E Class or the Infiniti M.

I saw this on the road last week

It looked very nice ...the numbers are impressive but i would have to see it take out an M5 piloted by a good driver (C's Bimmer) to believe it .
