Neat, 911 can be built as a 997, but anyway the Porsche brakes are not as good as the aftermarkets, the best would be 8 piston Brembos or others. When you drive a Porsche you must also stop immediatelly when needed, I have seen to many Porsche smashed, so nice car but be careful and buy BIG brakes but not from Porsche.

Personally I would take the C2S over the C4S but that is personal, definitely manual and the only other options I would say are essential are the Sports Chrono Pack, upgraded hi-fi and the Nav system.

All the other stuff will be nice for you, but don't expect to get your money back, and don't expect it to hold its value like everyone thinks Porsche do, OK they are better than most but you can get a 6-12 month ?75-80k car from an OPC for ?55-60k, so be prepared to loose ?20k in the first year if buying new.

Aston vs 997??
Got to be the 997 everytime, I would have the Aston if it was sat next to the Porsche but if you owned both had to give one back after 6 months I bet you would give the Aston back. Just look at the amount of Porsche owners who leave and buy an Aston to sell up again within a few months and go back to Porsche.

Forgot to say, I have been researching this for the last 3 months in a big way and will be getting a 911 at some point in the next 12 months, I have decided to wait as I want to keep the 535d touring.
I would rather have the 535d touring and a 2 year old 997 than sell the 535d and get a new 997 and an old estate for running around in and family holidays etc.

Also with Porsche extended warranty being so reasonable it doesn't bother me about getting a 2 year old car like it would with other marques, and it isn't like they really date much, if you look at one from 25 years ago it still looks pretty much the same.

Another option that I think it a must have on the 911 is the Porsche Sport Exhaust or PSE. The stock one is too tame and doesn't give you that lovely raspy sports car sound. THe PSE is night and day ahead of the stock. It does not add any HP to it, but it doesn't matter. Sport Shifter is a must as well. The stock shifter is a pile of shit. Unless you really live somewhere with snow and bad weather there is no real reason to get a C4.

Unless you plan on running in the snow, why not a 911S?

Agreed, that is the main reason I would choose the 'sport chrono pack' for the exhaust, the few other extras are nice too.

Also I agree, the C2S appeals far more than the C4S, and I think the majority of buyers would prefer the rear wheel drive version, unless you really need the 4WD I think it is a waste. Keep it raw!

I would opt for the 19 inch Carrera Classic wheel ($390). In the flesh, they look much nicer than the standard "S" wheel.

IMHO, I really don't like the Turbo wheels and think they look like uglier versions of the M6 rims.

I own a 2005 997 (base Carrera), my previous Porsche was a 1995 Carrera 4. For comparison sake, my wife has an '06 530xi wagon.

I love my 997, and very satisfied with the performance of the base Carrera. It really puts a smile on my face each time I turn the key. It's really an apples-to-oranges comparison, but my wife's 530 is very ponderous by comparison.

That said, my 997 has been very unreliable, and spent over 30 days in its first year at the dealer for various maladies. I could have forced Porsche to take the car back under my state's lemon law, but Porsche North America gave me a generous check not to initiate a lemon proceeding. Although most of the problems have been hammered out, the rear passenger side quarter window still creaks. I would take it back for a (fifth) time to fix the problem, but it's not worth the hassle.

I leased my 997, and will be very happy to turn it back in a year. I will feel sorry for the person who buys the car when it goes to auction as I feel that the car is not built to last.

So in summary, I love how the car drives but also love the fact that I get to walk away in a year.

My son is returning his 2006 911 Turbo vert under the lemon lemon law. Something about various electronic things his dealer can't fix including keeping his lights on. Otherwise he really likes the car.
