Now, I've checked out the new one on the web. It actually looks quite nice! The interior seems much improved. Hope I'll be able to get one as a rental next time visiting the US. Last time I had to choose between Chrysler 300C and Buick Lucerne.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention that none of the 3 dealerships could fix my AC. I brought it in at least 6 times over the summer and by the end of the summer I just gave up since I was going to be selling it before Spring anyway. I guess maybe I should change my recommendation to "Don't buy a Cadillac if you live on LI because all the dealerships suck."
A bad dealer is a bad thing for sure, for any car. The good new for me is that the local BMW dealers seemed to have swapped on which one has better (although still not great) service. Now I'm not driving across town at least.

The huge problem with those CTS is that they depreciate like crazy.
Have a look at your classifieds, you'll see CTs 2003 - 2004 going for less than 15 000$.

Guys I think you are missing a few points which contributed to car of the year and many of you are not comparing apples to apples here.

First off the comparison is the CTS with top model engine that is the direct inject V6 with 306hp v. the 535 or the smaller 256hp v6(carry over from last model) v. the 528.

To skip to the top of the line comparison which is what the car mags are doing.

First-someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe cadillacs 306hp direct inject NA V6 engine is the first to produce 300 plus hp from a NA v6. That is pretty impressive to me as a contribution to technology.

This came up in another thread where my gripe about bmw going turbo was lack of inovation. And that is a different arguement and it doesnt matter because I love turbos and FI cars so I am all for it. However I think this is pretty impressive.

Second for the dough-you wont see more gadgets that actually are really useful and good. The 40g hard drive idea is awesome with the sat radio. You basically can record anything you hear on sat radio instantly for playback without transfering or downloading a thing. The nav is superbly better than bmw and has many other gadgets.

I have only driven the 06 256hp model and there was nothing overly fun about driving one after driving a 5er to me. Even the sport model had horrible supporting seats, a HUGE steering wheel and just did not handle at all like a 5er. From everything I have read this is really corrected and verified by virtually every tester out there so I believe its legit. Probably to the point 99 percent of us daily drivers would not tell the difference in handling.

My only gripe which is small on the new cts is the tires are still higher profile than even the bmw by a bit. I always like a lower sitting car with lower prof tires but hey you can change out rims and tires easily.

I think if you like the look of the car this is a real steal at the price. Or if you are out of range for a 535 I would definetly pick this over the current 528 you can get into.

They also have all the goodies like sport mode, comfort mode etc buttons to adapt ride and gearbox control etc.

I think you should drive one before you put your verdict down-

The new z01 vette with 700hp shares the same motor with the cts v that will be out next year-likely toned down to 600 some hp but obviously not too difficultly tuned upwards. That will be a monster! Its like a bigger badder version of the already bad ass ls7

You CANNOT say Gm cannot build engines-you simply cannot

the CTS is a VERY good looking car on the outside, but like with all american cars, the interior is just yukky....too gimmicky and oddly designed. as with the corvettte, if they would spend some money and put in a nice interior they would be great cars.

Car and Driver (Jan 08) compared the CTS DI with an E90 328i, Infiniti G35 and MB C330. The E90 rated best overall of all four.

I do not like the looks of the CTS ... ugly as others have added.

Toyota (IS350) and Nissan (G35) had 300+ hp NA V6s for a while already.

The engine is not impressive. The torque is in the 260 range or something.

GM is the impressive part here. Finally, a very competitive car going head to head with the existing premium brands. Who would have thought GM would wait 20 years to compete on the world stage. They milked that Northstar crap for years.

Angry but proud American.

That's something to ponder !! You're probably right from a pure driving perspective.
Cheers
