i went from a 1.9 tdi golf mkv. to a 520d se. comments on here are spot on. the 520d is adequate and is deceptively powerful. i've also had a mk4 gti 1.8t 150bhp and it's nearly as quick but doesnt feel as fast as the 1.8T. have you gone for the auto? i wasnt too impressed with the 520d initially but it is loosening up and this helps ALOT.
(doesnt help that i have driven other 530d's in the past!)

theres always dms who can remap from 163 to 208 bhp. giving a fair bit more power than the 525d.
The performance figures for the 520d are actually slightly quicker than my 1.8T so hopefully it will feel similar or slightly better mid range.

I didn't go for the auto based on:- My wife, who will drive the car most was used to a petrol manual, a diesel and auto was too much of a jump. The auto is a fair bit thirster although perhaps not so much in the 'real world'. Of all the E60's to have, a manual 520d shouldn't suffer so much when it comes to resale as say a 530d which is almost expected to be an auto. I have been advised this from several sources.

Do you know how much the DMS remap is and how it affects fuel economy?

After my third update call from my friendly dealer (well they haven't got my money yet ), I have been given a delivery date of 12th June.

In excited anticipation of my very first BMW (520d SE saloon, Monaco blue, styling 116 alloys with RFT and a spare wheel , black dakota, brushed aluminium trim, media pack, visibility pack, advanced a/c, heated fronts, high beam assist, extended lights package, non smokers pack, model deletion and 3 years service), what differencies should I expect from my 2002 Audi A4 1.8T Avant (150bhp )?

What is it like to own an E60? Does a 4 pot diesel still count?

Feel free to post as many serious and/or funny comments as you wish!

P.S. I'm also running this thread on bmwland.co.uk so it will be interesting to compare the quality and quantity of replies!

WEll considering your getting out of a car that basically is the same car as a 1995 VW Passat, I would say you have a lot to look forward to. Like reliablilty, comfort, innovation, and sportiness.

However as your driving your new 5 series there are some things that are going to look very familiar to you. Like the small screen in your dash that gives your your computer info and time date etc and fuel low reminder as this is the same component that VW/Audi have been putting in the A4 since 1995!

The thing that tells you your low on fuel and also stops you from seeing your radio station and time and date on idrive (Very Badly designed).

I think you will enjoy the move. I had 2 A4's before I got an e46 3 series, had that for a year and then got the 320d touring, sold it an bought an ML but really wanted another A4 as I love the styling and interior. Got a 2.5tdi avant and had it for 6 months, but found it dull in comparison so got a an S-Line A3 dsg and that was better, but still not as good as the bmw, so got a 3.0 cab and again better but still was missing something, so I gave up and got an A2 as I thought I was just bored of cars, that lasted about 3 months and was totally impractcal so I bought an A6 avant, again nice to look at and sit in but so boring to drive, tried the 3.0tdi quattro A6 and A4 and they did nothing for me so tried the S4, getting alot better!

However, then tried the 535d, wow! I knew what was missing, balance. It is all about having a car that feels balanced, you can have it quick like the S4, but get out of that and get into a BMW and you really can feel the difference straight away, you don't need to rag it as much to really enjoy it.

I may go back to Audi at some point now they seem to be getting it better with the RS4 etc. but not for a while I bet.

Be interesting to see what you think when you have had it for a few weeks.

That concept I can understand, but to not even be able to see what radio station is playing? Bad design.

I can't say you haven't driven many other cars to compare to!

Your description of what all your other non E60 cars were missing - balance - is interesting.
I wonder what single word other E60 drivers would use to describe the driving experience.

You can be sure I will be posting my first reaction comments and a more considered opinion later on.

Don't want to make this a 520D v 525D post but DMS do chip all the diesels

525D DMS = 216 bhp and 363lbft (492 NM)
