Assael tried to charge me $330 for the bluetooth upgrade on my car!
They are smoking something bad.

I countered with $150 and they declined to perform the upgrade.

oh well, guess i will take my business else-ware.

(just wanted it done, since i am without my car anyhow -- waiting for tires and rims to be replaced for pot-hole incurred damage)

They came down to $220 for installation. Since mine is a 2004, BMW does not cover the upgrade.
The $220 sounded more reasonable after I understood this.
Still no wheels/tires yet.

I got my bluetooth installed yesterday. It works great. The sound quality is not too bad at my end. The people at the other end said they hear an echo a bit but it's not too bad either.

I am using a Verizon/Moto V710. The address book updated without my help. When I added a new address on the phone, it does take a little time to update it on the Idrive. Nothing major though.

One minor complaint. I have to add my own voice commands/names individually. nothing too serious though.

I just had my dealer activate the bluetooth on my 2004 545i (May 2004 production). No parts were required, just 3 hours(!) of programming.
I purchased a Motorola V710 with Verizon service, and the car and phone communicate data just fine. However, the sound quality on the receiving end of a call I place (so I am told) is loosy -- like I am speaking in a cave, plus other distortion.

Anyone have any idea of what the problem might be. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

First, try turning the volume down a little. Second, the echo was fixed in a software upgrade (I believe V15.2).

I have had no promlem with the BT once I understood the process to pair and realized that it can take a while for the phone book to transfer over if you have a number of entries. I have the Sony Ericcsen T637 and it works great. Because I had 150+ entries in my phonebook, it took over half an hour to fully sync and show up in the car's phone book. Have also been able to add in easily the numbers I want as "voice recognizable" in the car's voice phonebook (note: this is different than the phonebook synced from my cell phone). Calls coming in and going out have been fine. What I hear is clear and from what the people I'm calling say, I sound fine to them.

DOES IT TRANSFER THE PHONE BOOK EVERY TIME YOU DRIVE THE CAR, THAT MEANS IT'LL TAKE 1/2 EVERYTIME?

No - it remembers the phonebook.
