What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a wireless protocol that is used to communicate from the car to a bluetooth enabled cellular phone in a small area usually less than 10 meters. The bluetooth protocol allows you to use your bluetooth enabled cellular phone completely hands-free through iDrive and the cars voice activation system just like the CPT9000 built-in phones allows you to do.

I have been told the US models will not have bluetooth ready for 2005 production. Is there an estimated time bluetooth will be available in the US?

In europe you can choose from several bleutooth phones wich can be paired with your car. You'll need the bluetooth option and prefferably a cradle for the phone wich can be mounted in your armrest. If you buy the cradle the phone is connected to the outside antenna of the car and is charged by it. Without the cradle the phone will also work but it will use it's own antenna (and you can experience a bad connection sometimes).

If you buy another approved phone by bmw you can also get another cradle so you still are able to use the external antenna and charging.

My I drive shows blue tooth. I did not order a phone option. Can I just buy a blue tooth phone and start using it in the car--ie put in a phone book, use it hands free, etc.
Does the dealer have to program it?
