TCU (Telematics Control Unit) problems
#1
As it appears pre 3/04 production cars need a new TCU B4 Bluetooth will work, I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with their TCU that required a replacement of the TCU. Perhaps my car has the same problem.

I posted a while ago on a notice from BMW on a TCU problem that was causing echo's on the recieving party's end. My car is a 5/04 build - I'll check with the dealer and post what I find out.

yes, interestingly my car was built in May and while setting up BT the dealer seemed to have problems making it work. They installed another TCU unit (actually produced much earlier than the original one in my car) and then BT worked.
It may be that the one that I had was defective and that the older TCU unit was not. But the surprising thing was that the TCU that worked was made in March 04!
So, it may not only be the production/installation date of the TCU but also if the one in the car is defective!
Just because you have one from a January build does not mean it works (BT or not).

Worked on my car (but I really had that issue........).
Good luck in convincing your dealer (hoping he's not reading with you on this forum!)

[/quote]Sans, how long did it take you to get the new TCU installed? My car has now been at the dealer for three days for the emissions recall/software update, and when I spoke with them this afternoon, they said it wouldn't "take", but that it would definitely be ready tomorrow. Right! I don't care about BT, just curious about the TCU change and if that took a while to get parts etc.

Mine is a bad comparison because they needed to outsource the fitting of my runflat snows - THEN they couldn't get TCU (after numerous tries) to take the upgrade and I think ordering a new one (my old TCU was part number 84 11 6 948 921; my new TCU part number is 84 11 6 956 688).? That took at least four days to arrive; one to install and reprogram.? They had my car almost two weeks.? Of course, when you're getting a $1800 TCU under warranty, driving a 325xi for a while seems like a fair deal....

Just got the call and they finally got the software to take. SA said it was version 15.0, "the latest, greatest". I'll be curious to see if has helped the throttle delay, which I didn't even mention to them when I dropped it off. Sirius is done as well, just need to get it activated.
