I phone not working through I-pod

My girlfriend and I recently downloaded the latest software update for the I-phone. Now when we use the I-phone as an I-pod (on airplane mode), the car does not recognize the device or recognizes it only sporadically. Has any one experienced the problem? Is it apple related or BMW related?

I have updated my iPhone recently (about a couple of weeks ago) as well. Do NOT go in the airplane mode when connecting, either click NO or just ignore it. thats what I do and never have any problem using it as iPod and/or as phone. I connect it as ipod and still can make and receive calls. It pauses the song and after the call starts playing again. No problems.
My iPhone software version is V2.2. Later versions apparently prevent jailbreaking the phone (which I haven't yet done anyway). My last I-Drive software update was in November, can't remember the version number.
What do I need to do to play a song thru my iPhone???
