Build date was March 2005; so, the car is a late 2005 model car. There are also other glitches in the I-drive menu. For instance, there is a screen to vary the screen "Illumination". I can get to that function and even pull up the screen that shows it adjusted in the centered position. But, there are no menu options to allow me to change that setting for screen Illumination.

There is no opiton on the Idrive to pair the phone. When I finally get down to the screen that gives me a choice between "PHONE" ir "BMW ASSIST", there are no other menu selections when you toggle to the PHONE selection.

Perplexing.
If you don't see any options to pair phone in iDrive, then you might need a software update to enable it providing that your TCU (phone module) is up-to-date. Ask the dealer to do it for free if the car is still under warranty

I have a problem with my Bluetooth but reading all the replies above I think there's something I can add that might help some people.

The Bluetooth enabling isn't in the obvious menu...it's not in UP and COMMUNICATION. It's in the main 'I' menu at the bottom.

Mine is a 2004 and won't enable but I think I've got a Bluetooth MULF module problem.

Well, I still need help. I can find the Bluetooth menu but there does not appear to be any way to add a new phone. Can someone walk me through the process? I am beginning to develop a negative attitude towards the iDrive! What it needs is a "Search" or "help" button.
Any luck yet? Going through this thread I could not find the right way to access the bluetooth settings of iDrive. Annoyingly, as most people allready found out, the settings can not be accessed via the obvious communication page. Instead you have to go to the settings page by pushing the iDrive button in the main menu. Then you can select bluetooth and enable bluetooth and add new partnerships.
Just thought to add this information as to be of help for future seekers.

The mic in your car might be broken or the wire connection is loosen. Take a look at that 1st. Its located in the overhead light module in the front.

If you wanted to play music from the iPhone, then you need the iPod integration kit or other similar aftermarket setup (e.g., Dension).

Did you check the version of your TCU. Older version could pair and make phone calls, but voice communications did not work properly during the call, hence, the need for the correct updated TCU. I just had my BT retrofit done on my 2004 545i with 02-2004 production.
