#TBT: First Four Generations of M5 Tested Back To Back

By -

four generations

It’s been almost three decades since the first BMW M5 debuted, and then subsequently went on to redefine what we thought about a German Sports sedan (which, honestly wasn’t much until BMW turned the industry on its ear). It’s amazing to think that within the first four generations of the M5, there were three different engine configurations, three different kinds of transmissions, and styling that was worlds apart from one bookend to the other.

In the Cars video below, each generation is presented with a delightful lack of fluff. The audio is exactly as it would be if were standing next to the car, with no need for additional commentary. And around slaloms and skid pads, you actually feel the desire to nerd-out and watch how each one dodges cones.

The E28 is seen as the Genesis to the M5 lineage; we often praise the E39 for it’s ultra refined and near-perfect driving dynamics; and of course the E60 is epic in its own right. So does that mean the E34 is the underdog here? Honestly, I think so. If anything, it is far underrated.
