Throwback Thursday: MotorWeek’s Review of the E39 BMW M5

Since its debut in 1985, the BMW M5 has been the absolute benchmark of the performance sedan world. With impressive combinations of horsepower, luxury, and agility, no other manufacturer has been able to match it. That was true in 1985 and it still rings true today. And every M5 through the years has received the same praise. But it’s always nice to hear, so let’s take a little throwback to the year 2000 when the E39 M5 was just arriving on U.S. soil, and see what MotorWeek had to say about the German sedan. It is not much of a spoiler, but they love every bit of it. From that 400 horsepower V8, all the way to its sharper handling, MotorWeek calls this beast a 4-door supercar.

I love getting to see these classic reviews revived on YouTube, and it is lots of fun to get a glimpse back at the car scene from decades past. It is hard to believe that this M5 is now 15 years old, but every BMW owner should be proud to see just how well it performed. Actually, looking at some of their performance numbers, the M5 would still be quite a barn-stormer in today’s market.

Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go search eBay for an E39…
