We Spied the Next M5, and There are Some Odd Details

The F10 BMW M5 hit our eyes in 2011, and even though it’s still one of the best fast sedans on the market, the competition from Audi, Mercedes, and even Cadillac is getting faster and more nimble every year. BMW has already been working on the successor to the current M5 for a few months, and we just caught another prototype mule running the streets. However, this particular car raises a few more questions than it provides answers.

First, let’s start with the obvious M-specific details. This camouflaged car is sporting the signature quad-exhaust outlets and the gigantic front brake calipers that all M cars are graced with, and our spy shooter says the noise coming from that exhaust is 100-percent M as well. The exhaust outlets are a bit smaller than they would normally be though, and while the calipers are M-spec equipment, the plain solid rotors are not. It may just be a simple fact that this is an early development car, and those changes will come later, but it still seems odd.

The oddest thing of all though is the second fuel door on the front fender. It matches the same fuel door seen on BMW’s plug-in hybrids. Now I might be willing to chalk that up to the fact that BMW is just testing random body pieces on their M5 mule, but we already have shots of other 5 Series prototypes that don’t have the additional energy port. Is this just a weird byproduct of a prototype that has been hacked up a few times, or is BMW going to be trying something new and different with the next M5? We already know the next M5 will be the first M sedan to offer xDrive AWD, so it isn’t 100-percent out of the realm of imagination to see BMW perhaps chase a hybridized super-sedan.

This is all just speculation on my part, but one thing is for certain, the next M5 will be radically different in a few different ways when compared to the cars that customers are used to.
