Are Car Commercials Becoming too Dramatic?

If you’ve seen a new car commercial, odds are it was a bit over-dramatic. As if the directors of the commercials were channeling Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. There’s a lot of intense music, overwrought voice-over, tight shots of the car, and close ups that slowly come into focus. They seem to be awfully rather heavy-handed in the delivery, for something that’s just trying to sell you a car. What’s confounding is that it has taken so long for someone to come along and parody these commercials.

Comedy duo Key and Peele are two of the funniest people on television right now. The pair’s comedic insights and sharp wit separate them from many other mainstream comedians. In one of their latest bits, they lambast how disproportionately athletes are paid to teachers by creating a spoof of ESPN’s SportsCenter, which they call TeachingCenter. But it’s the small portion of the bit at the end that is our real interest. At about the three-minute mark of the very funny video below, Key & Peele lampoon all those overly-dramatic car commercials, using a BMW M6 Gran Coupe.

Maybe we should get back to more zany car commercials, or ones that don’t take themselves so seriously. What do you all think of this? Are car commercials getting too serious?
