5-series fans rejoice! These photos show the new BMW M5 spied while testing on the Nurburgring (no surprise), and it’s likely to be due as a 2018 model. Unlike the M3/M4 reverting back to a turbocharged 6-cylinder, Motor Authority reports that the engine fitted to this car was distinctly of the V8 variety, and likely similar to the one fitted to the 30th Anniversary M5 model, which made 600 horsepower. Rear-wheel and all-wheel drive versions are to be expected, as well as M6 and Grand Coupe versions to follow shortly.

At the same time, Mercedes has been spied testing its E63 AMG in sedan and wagon form, which will be the BMW’s main breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The competition will be close though. Mercedes engineers know what their 4.0 turbo V8 is capable of, and BMW hasn’t shown a wagon or estate version in testing yet, while Mercedes has. And the biggest question still remains: will BMW assign a 6-speed manual to their newest version of the M5 or are those days long gone? We will let you know more as soon as news breaks.
