Information and support for the Passport 9500ci

The 9500ci is a discreet, custom install radar and laser system with detectors in the front and rear with a small display module that is easy to mount.

See my signature for a link to my installation notes on how I did it in my E60 and where I mounted the display.

We have a new member on the forum that is an expert support person for the product and is willing to answer support questions for us and we will use this thread for that.

Occasionally, I get a rear laser alert that I have determined is a false alert. It happens when I accelerate which leads me to conclude some sort of electromagnetic interference.

With the E60, and where I have routed the wires, I can't think of where the likely EMI is coming from. Is it induced along the connecting wire between the rear laser and the main module? It is induced at the unit attached to the rear license plate? And what does accelerating have to do with it? Fuel pump?

Rear laser alerts while accelerating are a sign of EMI, electro-magnetic interference, from the vehicle's ignition system.

Laser detectors use an extremely high gain amplifier which the slightest EMI can set off. Although the cable and laser detection circuits are heavily shielded, the long rear laser shifter cable acts like an antenna to EMI overpowering the noise filters in the system. You can try putting a clip-on ferrite choke on the cable. Try one end (eg interface module end) and it if does not work try the other end (eg rear shifter end). Be sure to wrap the cable around one side of the opened choke then close it. In my experience this solution is about 50/50 and depending on the installation can be a major hassle to accomplish. The chokes can be found at Radio Shack's website and possibly at some of their stores for a few dollars.

A better solution that works nearly every time is our custom made 9500ci RF filter. Our techs make these specifically for vehicles that emit more EMI than the system can cope with. They are only $30.00. They install inline with the main power to the 9500ci. To order one contact your Passport 9500ci installer or call our service department at 1-800-543-1608 between 8am-6pm Eastern Time Mon-Fri.

Thanks. I'll try the radio shack off the shelf type and experiment with a few places. For a few $$ any reason not to put one on each end?

if no luck i'll try out the Escort version.

The problem with experimenting is getting it to do it. Almost seems weather related. It hasn't done it for a long time. When it starts it seems to last for a few weeks then it goes away and I forget about it until it surprises me.

I have seen a few pics in forums with the laser deflectors being placed within the "mesh" of the front bumper. Pic attached is from a M5. Im assuming they are this way because they have to have a clear line of site, but wanted to ask the pro if they could be installed behind the "mesh". I personally don't want to cut into the bumper.

Its nice to have a pro on here. Thanks!

Police laser guns (LIDAR) uses infra-red light to obtain your speed. Laser jammers/shifters also use infra-red light to confuse the laser gun and prevent it from obtaining a speed. Because the shifters are using light, any opaque material (like a grille) will severely impact performance. Our laser shifter modules internally have a row of sensors and shifter LEDs. If any of these are blocked then performance will suffer. I have seen the module mounted carefully behind a grille (thin metal mesh grille on a Ferrari) to not block these internal LEDs and have heard positive results when it is done properly, but I do not recommend doing it. I recommend getting a spare grille and modifying one. If you ever want to sell the car then put the spare unmodified grille on the car. For your car to be invisible to laser then the modules will need to be visible.

If you want to see the internal LEDs on our laser shifters then use a video camcorder with "night shot". The shifter's housing is invisible to infra-red light so you will be able to see the internals when using the camcorder's night shot infra-red vision.

Please note that while laser jamming is not federally illegal (as opposed to radar jamming which is a federal offense), some jurisdictions prohibit the use of laser jammers or anything that interferes with police speed measurement devices. Please check your local laws before installing a laser jammer/shifter.

Hey I have a question regarding the 9500ci. When the unit is detects a lidar beam and goes into shift mode, does it stay in shift mode till the signal is gone or will it shift for a preset amount of time, like 5-8 seconds, and stop shifting even with the lidar beam still hitting the sensor. Just curious.

it will shift for a pre-set amount of time then disable (you can set this as an option in the configuration tool) so the leo can get a reading. hopefully by then you've slowed down.
